Six New Hatchings at Jurong Bird Park
Bird lovers have more reason to flock to Jurong Bird Park. Six chicks of six different species – the crown pigeon, golden conure, greater flamingo, Malay fish owl, red-shouldered macaw and yellow-naped Amazon - hatched in the last few months.
With only less than 5,000 golden conures found in the northern parts of Brazil, this species is extremely rare and endangered. Human factors like deforestation and illegal pet trade are severely threatening these highly sociable species, which can often be seen in pairs or small groups of up to 60 birds. A noteworthy achievement, the newly arrived golden conure will contribute to not only its ex-situ population, but also to the Park's goals in wildlife conservation.
These new hatchings are a result of carefully managed breeding programs, where privacy for these birds and sufficient nutritional intake during the nesting and incubation period were observed.
