What exactly is TCM?
TCM is a 3,000 year old holistic system of medicine that regards the mind, body and spirit as a single entity. Derived from the Chinese culture’s fundamental beliefs, it emphasizes the achievement of Balance and Harmony, alongside the inseparable nature of Man and the Universe.
How TCM works
Combining a group of techniques and methods to form a complete system of examination and diagnosis of health and disease, TCM is rooted in a theoretical framework derived from the Theory of Yin and Yang – the law of unity of the opposites, where they are both in conflict but at the same time, mutually dependent.
Balanced “Qi” (pronounced “Chee”) is a vital life force that is believed to flow freely through the body, manifesting and regulating a person’s spiritual, emotional, mental and physical balance. Disease is proposed to result from the disruption of this flow, causing the Yin and Yang to be imbalanced. Chinese physicians often examine causes of this imbalance and treat patients as a holistic entity instead of merely for a particular ailment or disease.
Comprising the use of medicinal herbs, nutritional therapy, acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping, massage and therapeutic physical exercises, TCM is widely accepted in the Western world as an alternate means to medicine.
